GUN reference in Red Dead Redemption?

So on one of the very last missions of the game Jack tells John one of the stories he was reading about. The story is about a man ravaged by redskins and his dad was murdered so he went out to kill the man that killed his father. This is the exact plot of theh game GUN. Did this just happen by chance or is this a direct reference towards GUN?
