Why do people feel they have to be "people pleasers" in order to be popular?

It's not necessarily that. Maybe they figure well, I'm with other people, so I might as well do my bit to add happiness to the occasion. Maybe they have a sincere desire to please, which is a hell of lot better than being an a*shole or not giving a sh*t.
